ELVIS, NIXON, AND MRS. ROBINSON
It was so sad to read the news about Ireland's Mrs. Robinson and her fall from grace. The media
had a field day because of the movie "Mrs. Robinson" with the same story plot.
From what I read, I assumed Ireland's Mrs. Robinson was a Christian fully indoctrinated with the teachings of Christ,
but alas, like so many of us, she tried to be good and then fell. In her case, her humiliation was public.
When Elvis visited President Nixon in the White House to ask for some type of badge
from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, he stated that he was on the President's side
when it came to the fight against drugs. "...he wanted to restore some respect for the flag which was being lost."
Three times during the meeting, President Nixon mentioned his concern for Presley's credibility.
During their darkest hours and right before their public careers would be over, both had fallen. Both
had lost credibility.
Would it be too much to ask that our leaders hold themselves to a slightly higher standard? Of
course "we the people" should follow suit.
We have only one life to live and during that time, we all sin and fall short. But God is a God of second
chances. It's not where we've been but where we're going. There's always the petition, "God forgive me for
the sins of my youth."
It's the sins we commit as full knowing adults that pain God and the world scrutinizes. Hopefully, there will be no "Mrs. Robinson II" any time soon at a local theater near you.
And Mrs. Robinson, but by the grace of God go I. Get back in the saddle and give it another go. If you're truly sorry,
God will give you another chance. Hopefully, the people will too.
